A formula for "the perfect sitcom" throws up results which are a mixture of the obvious and the infinitely arguable. It says Only Fools And Horses was the funniest of the TV series it was applied to, which will sound like simple common sense to many.
The research team came up with a formula which involves multiplying R, for the recognisability of the main characters, by D, for their delusions of grandeur, and adding a measurement of verbal wit (V), before dividing by F, to bring the score down, for the number of times somebody falls over.
Refinements to the basic formula include extra points for the scale of the difference in social status between highest and lowest ranking characters – and deductions for any scheme which actually succeeds. ...more
